Adventure Rooms
Training educators to improve literacy levels in primary schools in impoverished areas since 2010.
Prompted by the low English literacy levels in the Western Cape, the first Coronation Reading Adventure Room, managed by the public benefit organisation Living through Learning, was established in 2010.
Since the introduction of this programme, teachers have helped improve primary school literacy thanks to the training, tools, educational material and mentorship provided. For added inspiration, classrooms are transformed with painted murals to create a fun, adventure-themed learning environment.

Providing intensive mathematics training to teachers in impoverished communities since 2013.
One of the programme’s guiding principles is that upskilling and empowering parents and educators will have an immeasurable impact on a child.
Managed by the Primary Science Programme, Counting with Coronation runs workshops that focus on practical teaching; how to monitor and assess children’s learning of mathematics, how to use resources effectively to promote learning; and how to implement appropriate interventions to support struggling learners. Mathematics resource kits help teachers to engage entire classes of learners in practical mathematics learning. Including parents in workshops has also ensured that the learning process is supported outside the classroom.

Developing high-quality teachers from disadvantaged communities for rural, urban, low income and high-density schools since 2016.
Developed and managed by non-profit organisation The Global Teachers Institute (GTI), our Future Leaders Programme aims to address the severe skills shortage in a critical profession by providing bursaries to students studying towards a Bachelor of Education through Unisa.
Supporting these students every step of the way, the programme includes practical classroom training; dedicated mentoring and specialised tuition; and addresses teacher shortages, teacher retention and improvement in teacher quality.
The programme’s goal is to develop high-quality teachers from disadvantaged communities for rural, urban, low‑income and high-density schools in South Africa. In this programme, student teachers enrolled in distance education training are placed in schools on a full-time basis for the entirety of their studies to gain professional experience as they pursue a teaching qualification.

Providing training for emerging farmers across South Africa since 2017.
The Coronation Growing Entrepreneurs programme has positively impacted rural and peri-urban communities through economic development, job creation and poverty alleviation, especially among small-scale agricultural farmers.
Run in collaboration with the South African Institute for Entrepreneurship, the initiative informs farmers on topics about good governance, financial management, practical and legal aspects of farm operations and recordkeeping, to commercialise their efforts to support a sustainable business.

Creating circles of support around the child from conception to early years since 2019.
When considering a child's developmental needs, their entire ecosystem must be considered. As this process already starts during pregnancy, the Early Learning Research Unit (ELRU) programme creates circles of support around the child, from conception to the child’s early years. The fundamental aim is to ensure that children of a pre-school age are school-ready and prepared for a classroom environment.
ELRU enables access to an essential package of services that includes early learning, health, nutrition, social services and support for the primary caregiver. Interventions include, but aren’t limited to, a home-based Family and Community Motivator (FCM) programme aimed at the first 1 000 days (conception – 2 years).

The South African Education Project offers holistic educational programmes across the education spectrum (from early childhood development to tertiary support) within the community of Philippi and surrounding areas on the Cape Flats.
Carel Du Toit
Carel Du Toit
Offering holistic support to hearing-impaired learners since 2017.
Carel du Toit’s mission is for all children to have access to universal hearing screening and a pathway towards developing the most appropriate communication methods available to them. At the Carel du Toit Centre, children with hearing loss learn to listen and speak through the Carel du Toit methodology and hearing technology. The centre’s objective is for its graduates to thrive in a hearing world and to achieve whatever they aspire to.

Given South Africa’s severe food security deficit, millions of families are living below the breadline. The strong correlation between childhood hunger and stunted education outcomes is why we are determined to tackle both childhood food insecurity and learning outcomes.
For this reason, we are committed to the long-term support of sustainable feeding schemes in partnership with established hunger relief agencies, such as Ladles of Love and FoodForward SA.
