The Year is 2028. The internet has vanished overnight. McDonald's now sells cricket nuggets. And Tyla just bought the moon. In this wild new reality, fortunes will rise and fall. Where would YOU put your money to get the best returns?
Welcome to the Top Investor Challenge: Schools Edition, where we’ll throw you into imaginary scenarios only slightly less whacky than this one.
Registration Deadline: 11 May 2025
The Top Investor Challenge, open to all learners across South Africa, gives you and your classmates a chance to think like real investors and build money-making skills that will last a lifetime. Enter as a team of two to five learners by the 11th of May 2025, with no limit on the number of teams that may enter per school.
The Top Investor Challenge is an exciting investment simulation game where high school teams compete to build the best-performing investment portfolio. Learners will analyse future scenarios, make strategic investment decisions, and aim to achieve the highest returns.
The challenge itself begins on 12 May 2025 and runs until midnight on 19 May 2025. The game is virtual and can be completed anywhere with internet access. Learners have the flexibility to participate at their own pace. While we encourage thoughtful participation, the challenge is not time-intensive—learners could potentially complete all three rounds in one sitting, in an hour or so. Alternatively, they could complete it in phases over a few days.
On the morning of 12 May 2025, participating schools will receive an email with a link to the challenge portal, along with step-by-step instructions on how to play. To begin, each team logs into the portal. Once inside, they’ll watch a fictional scenario that sets the stage for the first round. This scenario outlines simulated economic conditions, industry trends, global events and other factors that could influence the performance of different investments. After watching the scenario, teams will receive a set amount of virtual funds, along with a list of investment options. Using the information provided in the scenario, they’ll be asked to make strategic decisions about where to invest their virtual money to achieve the best possible returns. The competition includes three rounds that work the same way, each with a new scenario. Learners can complete all rounds at their own pace. Teams are welcome to log out and return later, continuing from the last round they submitted. Once all three rounds are complete, they can submit their results.
Any learner in South Africa is welcome to enter the competition. Participants are encouraged to form a team, with each team consisting of two to five learners. There is no limit on the number of teams a school may enter.
The winning team earns R50 000 in cash for their school and R50 000 in Coronation Unit Trust vouchers, shared equally among team members.
